“Pots are formed from clay,
but the empty space within it
is the essence of the pot.” — Lao Tse

There once was a man who asked the guru a burning question.

“Who am I?”

The guru handed him an onion. “Your identity is made up of layers of thoughts and feelings. Peel them to discover who you really are.”

The man was both scared and intrigued.

He went home and began to peel the onion, layer by layer. Tears ran down his face and he grew more excited as he neared the center.

Finally, he was down to the last, a bit of onion folded over itself. He opened it and…

NOTHING.

There was nothing at the center of the onion.

All at once, the man understood. He laughed.

“I am this empty space where life experiences itself.”

It wasn’t the truth, but it was close enough.
