A couple weeks ago, I came across someone looking for a copywriter for their sales page.
That someone was none other than Tom Grundy, the Buddha of Banking. He wanted it to be written by a “walking, talking, breathing human” (not AI.)
For some reason, I had the inkling that person might be me.
Which this was weird because…
💭 Quick flashback to 2010-ish.
Back then I was on fire with learning all things internet marketing, and discovered I had a talent for copywriting. I spun headlines and bullet points like a wordsmith wizard and used them to sell our online courses. It was so much fun!
So I decided to try my hand at writing copy for other people.
Job #1 was a friend of a friend who needed a sales page for his Ayurveda course. He seemed like a super-cool spiritual dude, so I agreed to write the sales letter and defer payment until after he made his first sale.
Thehe sales letter worked and he made his first sales! Only he didn’t pay me.
Strike #1 for my budding copywriting career.
Job #2 was a student in our Book More Brides business, a DJ who absolutely loved my writing. He commissioned me to write a special report in my voice, which I did. When I delivered the report, he decided not to use it because “it didn’t feel like him.” (But at least he paid me for it.)
Strike #2 for me and copywriting.
After my bad experiences with being a writer-for-hire, you might understand why it was so surprising (shocking, really) for me to even entertain the idea of writing for someone else.
But entertain it I did, enough so that Tom ended up hiring me.
Here’s the truly mind-blowing part:
I enjoyed it!
Now, Tom is already a strong writer, with lots of material to pull from. So we had a chat to draw out the heart and soul of his offering, and I mixed that with his actual words, a sprinkle of copy magic to tell a cohesive story…
…and we had a Soulful Sales Page on our hands!
It tells Tom’s burnout-to-fulfillment story in his own voice and invites people into his new coaching program, without resorting to hype or pushy sales tactics, which was a requirement for us both.
The coolest thing is that I didn’t technically write it. Tom did.
Even better – Tom loved it, too!
Here’s what he said:
“I was worried I might lose the heart of my offer, but the opposite happened. Working with Steph allowed me to get super clear on what exactly I was offering, who I was offering it to and it made the offer shine even brighter. The whole process felt like a real creative partnership and I’m delighted with how the sales page turned out.
“Thank you so much! This is awesome. I love the message, the flow and the way the different sections weave together. I also love the non-hypey nature of the sale page 🙂”
With the yummy taste of success still on my tongue – which in this case is cinnamon honey – I’m curious…
Do you have something you’ve been putting off writing?
- Website copy
- A sales letter
- An offer
- Your bio or About page
I just might be your writer!
I do have a few conditions. (My equivalent of the red M&M clause):
- No hype, high-pressure tactics, or clickbait. Not gonna happen.
- We’ll co-create this, so it has your voice and vibe. You need to either have past writings or videos we can pull from OR be guided through a few questions and exercises designed to draw it out of you.
- You’ll need to commit to FAST feedback (3 business days max) when I have questions or need resources from you.
If you’re still interested, contact me and let me know. We’ll chat to explore, with no pressure to proceed further.
Yours in love and play,
Steph
