Last year a coach colleague of mine invited me to partner in a new venture to train coaches.
It was a solid idea. Inspiring, really, with real potential.
But as we talked about it, something started to feel weird. Especially when they spoke about money.
“I don’t want it to be about money at all,” they said. “Every time I do something for the money, it gets crazy. This time I’m leading with service.”
I didn’t believe them.
The glint of greed was in their eyes, and the sweet stench of flattery in the air as they said how much they wanted me in this project.
I listened to my gut and said no.
I was reminded of this today pondering my newest experiment: The DragonHeart Portal Conversations.
I love being generous with my time. The coaches I’ve hired and admire won me over with generous serving before we ever spoke about price.
But lately, I’ve started to see what often hides beneath all that generosity: a subtle avoidance of money.
It’s easy and comfortable to give and serve. Not so comfortable to ask for money in exchange.
I’ve caught myself doing it, too, downplaying the value of every conversation, especially the ones that look like “sales.”
But here’s the truth I’ve come to see:
The most powerful transformations begin in a sales conversation.
When two people meet honestly to get really clear about what they want and what’s on offer, something sacred happens.
Selling, when it’s real, isn’t about convincing. It’s a portal to infinite possibilities.
As Clare Dimond writes:
“The promotion, the new business, the money, the good health are revealed – not obtained.”
That’s what I see, too. Honest selling is a revelation of what’s actually here.
