I was 38 years old before I asked myself the question that would transform my entire life:

“What do I want?”

I’d spent my life trying to anticipate what others wanted so I could please them. I sought out ways to help them so I could prove myself.

I never once asked what I wanted for myself.

So when I began exploring my true desires, it turned my life upside-down.

I discovered that the life I’d created, wonderful as it was in many ways, wasn’t the one I wanted to be living.

It’s what sparked me to leave my loving marriage, a profitable business, and comfortable life. I became a traveling pet sitter and digital nomad, and eventually immigrated to Portugal for a life on the beach.

Perhaps that’s why the question, “What do you want?” takes on such sacred importance in the DragonHeart Portal Conversations I’m having. I know just how potent and life-transforming knowing what you want can be.

This might also explain why for so many of the people the question, “What do I want?” is taboo.

They’re afraid of wanting too much.

Or convinced that they’re not allowed to want.

Or they have a habit of putting other people’s wants before their own.

Oh, how I understand the allure of denying oneself for others! I made myself quite the martyr to others’ needs and wants, telling myself the sacrifice was a virtue.

But serving the needs of others when it does not align with your own desires is not true service – it’s voluntary slavery.

True service is not about denying the self, but about expanding the self to include others. It isn’t driven by obligation, but by an aligned desire to make a difference.

And so when you finally give yourself permission to earnestly, honestly consider what you want from your authentic self, even if you’re so out of practice that you can barely spit out the words, you come alive.

The tiniest of your desires ignites more of them, because humans are meant to desire. It inspires our creation, growth and evolution.

A clean desire for its own sake – not for what we think it will get us – is pure magic. An unstoppable force of creation.

Would you like to invite your desires to reveal themselves? To inspire your dreams and contribut to the inspired creation of your life?
