When I moved to Portugal, it felt like I was starting over from scratch.
It was a new country, a new language and a new timezone.
I was moving in with someone after only a short time in a long-distance relationship.
I had no family in Portugal and my comfortable American bubble was gone.
I remember wondering if I’d lost my mind. It was going to be hard work!
But what I discovered was that nothing about it was “from scratch.”
Everything I’d learned in past relationships came with me.
My years of mentoring, coaching, teaching came with me.
My way of seeing the world came with me.
My business didn’t disappear just because the coordinates on the map changed.
It wasn’t a loss of grounding. It was an expansion.
We tell ourselves we’re starting from scratch when something big changes: a move, a breakup, a new offer, a shift in identity, a moment of beginning again.
But there is no “scratch.”
There is no zero.
There never was.
If the desire is present, the path is already active.
If you can feel the possibility, you’re already inside it.
You’re not rebuilding from nothing.
You’re building from everything you already are.
Instead of asking, “How do I get there?”
We ask, “What already exists here that I can expand?”
Try this experiment today:
Write down the question that’s been swirling in your mind. Then write down what you already know in your soul. The simple, obvious truth that’s been drowned out by the noise of your thinking.
That’s solid ground you can build on. It’s where movement originates and where clarity is found.
