I used to talk myself out of doing things all the time.
I’d have this little idea-seed drop in with the feeling of, “That would be freaking amazing!”
And then before it even saw the light of day, I’d stomp it out with the big boot of insecurity.
Nobody’s going to buy that.
How are you going to pull that off?
Who do you think you are?
Just like that, the idea is snuffed out.
Last year, I started to catch wise to all the ways fear was extinguishing my fire before it had a chance to burn. And once I started to see it, I couldn’t unsee it.
One moment in particular stands out.
I’d been brainstorming ideas for promoting the Florida retreat I was hosting with friends when an idea popped. A well-known mentor in our coaching community was going to be in town during our retreat. What if we invited her?
I announced the idea and said I’d reach out to them.
I got off the call and immediately felt the gravity of what I’d done.
FEAR settled over me like a big, wet blanket. I felt terrified of reaching out to this mentor, and horrified for having said I’d do it.
And then a sneaky little thought slid in, whispering:
“Do it later. Not now.”
That thought felt so much better than terror that I clung to it like a life preserver.
And then I caught myself.
I wasn’t waiting for a better moment. I was taking mself out of it.
I’d used this strategy a million times before, but this time it was different. I noticed that I was talking myself out taking action.
So I took a deep breath and declared, “No! I’m sending an email right now!”
And I did.
Before I had a chance to scare myself or procrastinate myself out of it.
As soon as I stopped thinking about writing the email (ick! horror! dread!) and started writing it, the feeling disappeared. I typed up a playful, loving invitation and hit send.
I did the “dreadful” thing, and strangely enough, the doing wasn’t dreadful at all. Only thinking about it was.
It’s not really relevant to this story, but in case you’re curious, here’s what happened next:
Within 40 minutes, I had a response from this mentor who I was so afraid to bother. While they diidn’t come to our retreat, they invited me out for a drink. And it turned out my love-gushing email arrived at the exact time they were asking themselves, “What if the Universe really is nothing but love?”
What’s the point of this email?
If you really want to do something, and you can, you will.
It’s inevitable.
Except when you talk yourself out of it.
Fear. Discouragement. Insecurity. Laziness. Distraction.
Whatever your go-to strategy for throwing water on the fires of inspiration, it’s all the same thing:
Thought.
A thought that feels bad enough to make you stop.
But thoughts don’t mean what you think they do, and feelings can’t hurt you.
You’ve survived every single feeling you’ve ever felt.
The Recipe For Becoming Unstoppable
Step 1 – You don’t have to believe everything you think.
Step 2 – Feelings can’t hurt you.
Step 3 – No thought or feeling can stop you. Only you can.
The Result = You become unstoppable.
“The world is a very malleable place. If you know what you want, and you go for it with maximum energy and drive and passion, the world will often reconfigure itself around you much more quickly and easily than you would think.” – Marc Andreessen
This is my wish for you:
To know yourself as the powerful creator of your experience, every bit of it, including the fear that says, “Don’t you dare go for your dreams!”
So you flip the bird at insecurity and take action on what you actually desire.
That’s what we’re going to do in The Simple Shift.
We’ll show up.
Acknowledge what we actually want (because you know, you do).
Look the “thing” that seems to be stopping you straight in the eye and see that it can’t stop you because it doesn’t even exist.
(It feels like it can, but it can’t.)
And you know yourself as unstoppable.
