a lady looking at the mirror with multiple different reflectionMy client Ava left an extremely profitable career as a real estate agent to raise her five kids, but this serial entrepreneur didn’t stop. She started an alternative school, a wedding venue and a vegan kitchen.

And yet, she suffered from one of the most obsessive and exhausting habits I see in creative, heart-led people.

Every time she had a new idea, she’d spend hours mentally rehearsing worst case scenarios. She’d argue with imaginary critics in her head and defend herself against people who weren’t even thre.

By the time she took real life action, Ava was already stressed, bracing for impact, and convinced that one of her doom-filled predictions was about to come true.

We called this habit Future Tripping.

Future Tripping is when you get high on imaginary futures. You live in mental fantasies and nightmares that take you away from what’s actually happening.

It’s sneakier than the notorious weasel-dragon.

When Ava showed up with clients after Future Tripping, she was trying so hard to say the “right” thing, that she wasn’t fully present. She sanitized her message to make it safe and acceptable for everyone.

It dulled her power, weakened her marketing and robbed her attention.

All to avoid a future that didn’t even exist.

Future Tripping keeps us from enjoying what’s here. It pulls us out of real connection with the people in front of us. And when it comes to sharing your work, your ideas or your offers…it makes your message invisible or blatantly inauthentic.

And here’s the worst thing about Future Tripping:

It never works.

No amount of mental rehearsal can actually protect you from the future or give you the ability to predict it.

It’s like when my ex-husband and my step-sons used to entertain themselves by planning what they’d do in a zombie apocalypse.

“We run to the post office, knock out the stairs, and live on the top floor.”

“No. We need access to water. The neighbor’s house is better.”

It was oddly fascinating, but also absurd. No amount of role-playing can stop an apocalypse. And no amount of Future Tripping can make life predictable.

If you want your message to land with the people you’re here to serve, you don’t need to predict the future.

You need to let them feel you. The real you.

Your heartfelt message isn’t something you invent. It’s something you uncover. It’s the truth you’ve seen, the insight you’ve lived, the gift you want to give.

And people can feel the difference.

Tomorrow, I’m leading a free masterclass for people who are tired of future-proofing their words and ready to speak from what’s real.
