They say, “Don’t reinvent the wheel.”
But what happens if we reinvent the wheel every day?
Most of the time we don’t notice the simple fact that we are inventing ourselves and our world, every moment of every day. It’s just not obvious because we keep inventing it similar to the old version.
Except for those moments when we really take a fresh look. The times when we slow down, listen and look.
Suddenly, something unexpected, fresh and new appears.
For example…
I’m writing this on a Sunday. My Sundays are often slow, sprinkled with bursts of creativity.
That’s not because Sundays are inherently slow. I just consistently create them that way because I allow myself to slow down and rest, and much of the world around me does, too.
But what if I show up with Sunday without the assumption it’s going to be like the Sundays that have come before?
I get curious and discover how this Sunday wants to be created.
Maybe Sunday wants to be slow like honey.
Or maybe it was a creative sprint with naps between.
Or maybe it hits like a tsunami out of nowhere, and it completely obliterates my lazy day plans.
Hey, I get why people say, “Don’t reinvent the wheel.”
It’s the perfect attitude for documenting processes for repeated tasks. Or my favorite recipe that’s been tweaked to my tastes. Or building an airplane that reliably flies.
In these cases, it makes sense not to reinvent the wheel.
It’s not that reinventing the wheel is better than not doing it.
I just like what recognizing how I reinvent (the wheel, my business, my identity) every day does to me.
It invites me to pause for a second and ask, “If I was creating this right now, how would I do it?”
Maybe I’d do it the same. Maybe I’d intentionally change something that could use an adjustment.
Or maybe I’d simply notice the fact that I’m inventing…and that alone allows something different to show up.
The feeling is different, in any case.
No more same ole, same ole.
It’s the wonder of a fresh possibility around every corner.
I get surprised by the world, and by myself.
If you were going to reinvent something today, what would it be?
And if you’d like to explore what wants reinventing, releasing, or emerging in your life, a DragonHeart Portal conversation is a great place to do it.
You talk. We listen. Noticing happens, and sometimes, reinvention follows naturally.
