When I was 44, my vision changed literally overnight.
I woke up one morning and couldn’t read my phone unless I held it six inches away from my face. Apparently, I was now experiencing age-related presbyopia.
I rebelled against the “inevitable decline” of my eyesight.
So I researched natural ways to improve your vision and discovered a program called Reclaim Your Eyesight Naturally. It offered practices to relax the eyes and improve your eyesight, along with some fascinating facts about how vision actually works.
Here’s what stuck with me?
Your sharpest vision comes from a tiny part of the eye called the macula. Its job is to take a small, focused snapshot of what you’re looking at.
The rest of your vision is invented by your brain. It fills in the gaps based on what it expects to see, so you can experience a seamless picture of the world.
It’s a powerful metaphor to describe the power of Thought.
You’re not seeing the world as it is; you’re seeing your thoughts.
Most of what you call “reality” is invented by your mind, drawn by your thoughts with stories, assumptions, and invisible rules.
This is the best news ever!
Because when your thinking shifts, the world you’re looking at literally changes, even if nothing “out there” does.
You don’t have to change the circumstances of your life. You just have to see it differently by seeing Thought.
Want another mind-bending factoid about your vision?
The images your eyes capture are actually upside-down.
Your lens received an inverted image. But your brilliant brain processes the data and flips it right-side automatically, so you can navigate the world.
Even cooler: if you wear special goggles that change the way light enters the eye, effectively flipping the image, it will be upside down. The experience is incredibly disorienting, but if you stick with it over time, your brain adapts and flips the image right-side up again.
Sit with that for a sec.
Your perception of reality is completely flexible and changeable.
At first, it can feel unsettling to discover how much of your world is made up.
But it sets you free. The things that once seemed painful or impossible were misunderstandings.
And when those fall away, a new world opens up.
“And when I see you
I really see you upside down
But my brain knows better
It picks you up and turns you around
Turns you around, turns you around
If you feel discouraged
When there’s a lack of color here
Please don’t worry lover
It’s really bursting at the seams
From absorbing everything, the spectrum’s A to Z” – A Lack of Color, by Death Cab For Cutie
