Don’t think outside the box.
I know they say you should think outside the box to be original and authentic. Color outside the lines. Break the rules.
But even that is a reaction to the status quo assumption about how things should be done.
The ones trying to “think outside the box” are often just as attached to the box as the ones who carefully stay inside it.
After all, to rebel you still have to make up the box first, and then react to it – even to be on the “outside.”
This reminds me of my high school boyfriend. (A quick, hopefully entertaining digression.)
The first time I noticed him was in our Model Senate class. We were roleplaying as neighbors debating a proposal to allow motorized boats on our peaceful lake.
People raised their hands, offering thoughtful responses. Most were against the proposal.
Then Darren was called upon. He marched up to the blackboard, grabbed a piece of chalk, and scrawled a diagram of his counter proposal to open up a theme park, rollercoaster and arcade.
He was a true rebel, compelled to act outside the box. Funny thing – he had to rebel against what he was told, even when it was something he actually agreed with.
And that’s the thing:
Reacting doesn’t contribute to authentic expression.
It’s still being ruled by what’s outside of you. Instead, consider:
What if you have neither a preference for being in the box or outside it?
What if you’re equally willing to color inside the lines or ignore them?
What’s left is a willingness to respond to this moment and trust what you know to do. It is no longer attached to how it looks or what anyone else has to say about it.
This reminds me of a piece of art that fills me with awe. It’s a nine minute soul-bearing song called, “Hi Ren” with 56 Million views on YouTube.
Beyond its message, which cuts like a knife and could come with a trigger warning for those sensitive about issues of mental health, it’s alive raw, creative genius, blending influences, breaking genres, daring to be what it is.
There is no obvious market for this video in today’s over-produced, hyper-polished music industry. And yet, I’m listening. Maybe you are, too.
