About 12 years ago, I became obsessed with Kundalini yoga.
While chanting mantras in Gurmukhi and reciting the Jaap Sahib, I noticed the statues and necklaces of the various Indian deities. I got curious.
Most people were drawn to Ganesha, Remover of Obstacles – hang out with him and he blasts your obstacles to smithereens, what’s not to like? Others chose Shiva and Shakti, representing the cosmic dance of the masculine and feminine.
But I fell in love with Hanuman.
There are many different versions of Hanuman’s story, but here’s my retelling of the one that grabbed me:
A woman called Anjana eats some magical pudding without realizing, and gives birth to Hanuman, a cheeky, half-human, half-monkey boy.
One day, Hanuman is hungry and tries to grab the sun, thinking it’s a ripe fruit. Indra, king of the gods, strikes him dead with a thunderbolt.
Hanuman’s father, Vayu, god of the air, gets royally pissed off and removes all air from Earth. All living things start dying off. Shiva intervenes by resuscitating Hanuman and convincing Vayu to restore the atmosphere.
(As you can see, when the gods get involved, things get messy fast.)
Indra and the other gods felt bad about what happened to Hanuman, so to make amends, they grant him incredible powers: immortality, invincibility, size-shifting, teleportation and more.
But Hanuman being Hanuman, he uses his powers for mischief. One day, he pranks the wrong monk and gets cursed:
He will forget all his superpowers – unless he’s using them in service to others.
That’s what I love about Hanuman. He reminds me of us.
We stumble through life with no idea of our divine nature. Struggling to control what we don’t understand, and completely missing the fact that we’re always using the superpower of thought to create our experience.
We forget who we are.
Yet when we lose ourselves in loving service, our superpowers are unleashed, and our true nature is revealed.
And — we get to do it like a playful monkey if we want. 🐵
Hanuman people have the twinkle with mischief in their eyes and the glow of loving service in their hearts.
It’s this spirit that infuses the IMPACT membership with playful creation and loving service, reminding us of who we truly are.
This month, we’re focusing on client creation as an act of service.
Come join us – perhaps you’ll rediscover your own superpowers and laugh your way to whatever you seek.
