Once upon a time, I invited a friend to a coaching session.
They shared a challenge, and I asked some questions.
“Yeah, I’ve thought of that,” they said.
“That didn’t work.”
“Yep, tried that, too.”
Every inquiry was batted away with some variation of, “I’ve heard this before.”
Needless to say, it wasn’t a very impactful conversation. There was nowhere for us to go and nothing new to see because they refused to look.
Nothing shuts down fresh perspectives and insight faster than thinking you’ve heard it before.
Why is this true?
Insight doesn’t come from information or someone else’s advice – it comes from inside you.
Have you ever re-read a book and found a passage you swear wasn’t there the first time? Suddenly, you’re seeing something that wasn’t there before.
A familiar idea + fresh thought = a new insight
Perhaps you’ve read some of my emails and thought, “Yeah, I’ve heard this before.”

That thought – the “I already know this” thought – is what’s stopping your growth.
You can’t see anything new with blinders over your eyes. Especially when it comes to the deeper truth about life and what it is to be human.
The most profound truths have been repeated for thousands of years in every spiritual tradition. They’re commonplace, and as such, their impact can be easily overlooked if you refuse to take a fresh look.
The thing about universal truth: there is always more to see.
