When I stumbled across Human Design eight years ago, I was at first horrified (“Wait for the invitation?” WTF?!?) and then fascinated.
According to this system, your birth date, time and location reveal the blueprint of how you’re designed to move through the world. It pulls from astrology, Kabbalah, the I Ching and the chakra system.
It was weird, esoteric and sometimes bizarrely accurate.
One concept in Human Design has stuck with me ever since, especially when it comes to being with other people.
A quick overview:
Your Human Design chart includes nine centers that are either open or defined, with gates and channels connecting them. Active elements in your chart (shown in color) reflect your innate strengths, challenges, and life purpose.
Here’s mine as an example.
See those solid lines connecting some of the centers? Those are active channels, like energetic highways already wired into me.
Now here’s where it gets interesting:
When you’re in a group, your collective energies combine to form something entirely new. If you happen to have one active gate in a channel, and I have the other, we complete it – together we activate a new energy neither of us could access alone.
We can quite literally do things together that we cannot do alone, simply by being in each other’s presence.
Now, I’m not an Human Design practitioner or even a fan at this point. I don’t know if their explanation for this is accurate.
But at the very least it’s an incredible metaphor to describe the creative power of community.
