The other day I was talking with my mentor about this story
I’ve been telling. Maybe you have one like it.
The story goes like this:
I’m missing something that qualifies me to play with the big movers and shakers. The ones I’d really love to be in the room with. What can I possibly have to offer?
And my mentor said:
“You won’t know what you can contribute until you’re in the room. What gets you in the room is just you being you.”
And I heard something.
I just need to show up in the room. Then I’ll know.
That truth came alive for me in London, when a well-known coach (who also happens to be a surgeon and author of eight books) turned to me and said:
“Wanna do something crazy?”
Next thing I knew, we were strolling into the BBC courtyard past security like we belonged there. Later, we walked straight into the Royal Society of Medicine, a members-only club for doctors where we had lunch.
And there I was. Me, in the room. Belonging.
It showed me how much of what I think disqualifies me is pure imagination. The only real requirement is showing up.
