I’m an American living in Portugal who voted in the last election by absentee ballot.
As such, I’m about as removed from the American political scene as I could be, which suits me just fine.
Still, the news filters through and I become aware of the recent “blow up” in the Oval Office at a meeting between President Trump and visiting President Zelenskyy of the Ukraine.
My friends from the US tell me they feel increasingly divided from their neighbors, on both sides of the political spectrum.
Some of my friends here in Portugal who were originally from the Ukraine stay quiet when it comes to politics, but express gratitude for the safety they’ve found in this country.
My Russian and Russian-speaking friends feel misunderstood and unwelcome.
This is how current events infiltrate my daily life, and international relations take on new meaning. Our cultural differences are undeniable, and I think, “Can’t we all just get along?”
I don’t know what these developments will mean for our countries or for me. It’s comforting that I can’t know because it means even my worst imaginings are completely made up.
What I do know is that for many people, it feels like the world is going crazy, full of uncertainty and danger. They’re experiencing insomnia, panic attacks and exhaustion.
Our job as coaches, wellness practitioners, spiritual teachers and changemakers is increasingly relevant because we can help.
What do you see that can help people find rest?
What do you know about how to find peace?
What can you say that will encourage people to keep going when chaos surrounds them?
People can’t feel seen and understood by an AI. They can only get it from a real person like you who cares.
Your job will only become more impactful and valuable as people turn to other real people for comfort, support and guidance.
This has implications for you right now.
It’s time to stop hiding and start sharing what you know. If this rings true, you know it already, and this is just a reminder.
Start with your neighbors, your friends, your loved ones. Be yourself and do what occurs to you to lift the burden, to nourish and share the love and hope in your heart.
“Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” Mother Teresa.
Do small things with great love.
Let’s do them together. 💖
Yours in love and play,
Steph
