Here’s a question from my recent reader survey:
“In your opinion, if there was one weekly or daily action to commit to that builds confidence through action- not motivation- what would it be?”
I love this question. And I also want to gently challenge one of its assumptions.
It assumes that action builds confidence.
Let’s take a closer look.
Confidence (def.) – the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something
Many entrepreneurs and changemakers wait to feel confidence before taking action. And if you’re waiting for the right feeling to act, you could be waiting for a very long time.
The truth is simpler.
You don’t need confidence to act. You only need to act.
Feelings have nothing to do with it, and they sure as hell can’t stop you.
I once demonstrated this to a client using my favorite prop, a pen.
I put a pen on the desk in front of me and declared, “I am strong. I am fierce. I am powerful. I believe in myself. I can pick up this pen.”
The pen did not move.
Then I said, “I’m not good enough. I’m weak. I don’t think I can do this…”
And I picked up the pen.
Confidence had nothing to do with it. Action did. And I had no idea if I could really pick up the pen until I actually tried.
So yes, confidence sometimes comes after taking action. But that’s not the most powerful confidence.
There is a confidence that can’t be found in any particular action. It can’t be practiced or trained.
It doesn’t come from proving yourself.
It comes from recognizing what you actually are.
Not your personality or your résumé. Not your past successes or failures. Not the story you tell about yourself.
But you as life itself.
Alive. Responsive. Intelligent. Growing.
When you really see that, something shifts.
You realize that you don’t need to be confident in your abilities to attempt something. You know you’ll be okay no matter what happens.
Every hard thing you’ve ever faced, you got through. Maybe not gracefully or quickly, but you did.
Something carried you, and that something is still here.
That’s deeper than confidence. It’s standing on the truth of what is.
Knowing that takes you beyond confidence.
You can try anything.
It might work. It might now. But what happens does not damage or diminish who you are.
So instead of giving you a daily action to build confidence, I”ll offer this:
Spend time noticing how life is already supporting you.
Notice how your body heals. How insights arise. Notice how you’ve survived things you once thought would break you.
Get curious about what you can depend on.
Look back on the hardest things in your life. What got you through it?
This is better than a feeling of confidence because it’s lasting and true. And when you know you’ve got that to fall back on, you can do anything, and if you want to, you probably will.
If this resonates, that’s exactly what we explore inside a DragonHeart Portal Session.
These sessions are a space to slow down, see more clearly, and reconnect with the deeper ground beneath you, and the power of what you truly want.
When you see that, action becomes lighter, cleaner and more powerful.
