What does art teach us about life and business, and how do we create with FLOW?

Sue Kearney, multi-talented artist, marketer and self-described “barely tamed hippie” joins me for a raw, meandering conversation about art, aging and dealing with grown-up tantrums. In the midst of a low mood, Sue shows up as herself and makes the art of conversation like a badass, in my (decidedly not) humble opinion.

Watch Sue channeled her tantrum with fluid art and turned it into a performance piece here:

Here’s some of what we explore:

  • Aging like a badass and leaving a legacy
  • Sue’s story of trying to be an artist and not having much fun, and becoming a channel for something greater through fluid art
  • Art for dealing with addiction
  • Creating compelling copy that gets people to click the buy button
  • The joy of “art bombs”
  • The gift of art and movement for living in flow

Unleash Your Inner Artist & Make Your Mark

Sue didn’t always consider herself an artist. For years she tried to be one and was her own worst critic, which wasn’t much fun. At some point, she let go of the need to be good and began to follow the good feelings that moved her.

Here are a few of my insights gleaned from our conversation.

Whenever the impulse to create moves you, it’s an invitation to fluidity. Being a channel for creative energy feels good. Fluid art and sword form movement have taught Sue about flow and following the impulse to create.

Flow is a dance of both learning restraint and being willing to go too far and see what’s possible. Sometimes less is more, but pushing beyond the limits can lead to surprising discoveries, and was how Sue sold her first piece of art.

Say as little as possible and use compelling visuals on your website. Your job is to extract the jewels from your copy and create elegant organization to keep people on your website long enough to click the buy button.

Every creation is art and everyone is an artist. When there’s less in the way of your artistic inspiration, whether your instrument is a brush, pen or conversation, you can make your mark from a grounded place.

Art isn’t therapy, but it is therapeutic. Creating with her hands was critical in Sue’s recovery from addiction, and continues to be a source of nourishment that calms her nervous system.

Making fluid art is like life; you seldom get exactly what you plan. What you get is often compelling, beautiful and fun. Go for the “what if?” and you can always paint over it.

Ask for what you want and you just may get it. Big asks have brought tremendous gifts into Sue’s life, now that she’s learned to ask for what she desires.

“I want to pass on what I’ve learned makes entrepreneurship less fraut and more fun, so you know what you’re putting out there is your true voice in a way they can best be heard.” – Sue Kearney

Meet Sue Kearney, Artist & Maker

Sue Kearney’s a maker. She makes art, websites, healing potions, and beauty products — magic of all kinds. Sue mentors and teaches her unique take on living your best life, making your unique mark, and living in and from joy more, and from stress and angst less. One of her mottos is “simplify your life.”

Sue has described herself as a “barely tamed hippie” and a recovering know-it-all. (To be honest, Sue’s still convinced that she knows a thing or two and has plenty to teach. It’s just that she’s less committed to making you agree with her opinion these days.)

Sue’s anti-racist and committed to allyship and relinquishing privilege.

Sue just launched her first e-course and has three more coming right behind. Partly legacy work (Sue’s 70 and is honoring her daughter’s request to “Write it all down, mom, all the recipes, everything.”), partly a clear change in direction: more simplicity, more ease, more spaciousness, more availability to being of service.
