How to Find Your Purpose
Jonathan defines purpose: it reveals the meaning of your life and can be found through your goals, dreams and gifts. It is why you do what you do and can bring a sense of great satisfaction and fulfillment.
Putting words to your purpose allows you to come into alignment with it. Whatever we focus on, the brain gives us more of it. So by articulating your purpose, you’ll begin to see it more clearly in your life, and it can be used as a filter for your words and actions.
“Be sure that you have a purpose. You’re here for a reason and your presence in this world is a contribution.” – Jonathan Brum
Jonathan gives some direction for finding your purpose:First, know that you have one because everyone does.
- Reflect on 5-10 impactful experiences in your life. What did you learn from them?
- Think of 3 people you really admire and write down the adjectives that describe what you love about them. Pick 3 words that bring a smile to your lips. Are you willing to see this is who you are?
“You can only see it because you have it in yourself.” – Jonathan Brum
Simon Simek’s Golden Circle of purpose – The outer circle is what you do. The middle circle is how you do it, and the inner circle is why you do what you do. The what and how don’t move people, but the why speaks to the heart.
A purpose statement doesn’t mention what you do or how you do it, but focuses on why. Jonathan’s purpose statement is, “to support others to discover their purpose and contribution, so people can live the life they are meant to be living.”
What if your purpose is simply to be you? You do that no matter what you’re doing or where you are. The things you admire in others are what it feels like to be you. The heart of purpose is BEING. You being yourself and moving forward with your intentions, that your purpose.
“In your heart of hearts you know that you’re here to make a difference, even the smallest one. You want to know that when life ends, the world was just a little bit better because you were here.” – Jonathan Brum
The four realms of metaphysics give us different, seemingly paradoxical, perspectives on purpose. From the spiritual perspective, worth is self-evident and purpose doesn’t need words. From the ontological perspective, humans create a sense of meaning and fulfillment.
You already have the answers you seek. Jonathan shares his continual surprise at the wisdom that lies within people. We can see and draw this out in others through presence.
“Nevertheless, I am willing.” Jonathan uses this phrase in difficult situations or times of doubt to bring forth his heart and purpose. It allows him to move forward with greater ease.
