In 2001, I said “I do” to a man I loved.
Secretly, I never wanted to be married. I did it because it seemed like what I was supposed to do.
He was amazing. (Still is – he’s even on my email list and possibly reading this email right now.)
We had a beautiful journey through multiple businesses, owning homes and building our lives together. I enjoyed being married most of the time.
But in 2018, after 22 years together, I changed my mind.
I left my happy marriage, the business we owned together, and life as I knew it. Simply because I didn’t really want to be married.
I thought leaving my old life behind would bring me the freedom and creative expression I was yearning for. But I discovered something surprising.
The source of unhappiness in my business and relationship was the same:
Doing what I was “supposed to do” rather than what I really wanted.
Pleasing others, filling the roles I was good at, instead of living from joy.
I thought my happiness depended upon the happiness of others.
Is it any wonder that clients who come to me for help growing their business also have similar challenges with relationships?
Here’s the deal:
You know whether something is right for you or not. You do.
It has nothing to do with what your family, friends or the media have to say about it. Logic doesn’t tell you.
You just know.
If your business doesn’t feel aligned, you know that, too.
I’ve been enjoying this affirmation lately:
“When I do what I actually want, something wonderful always happens.”
It’s true. Not because everything always works out. (It doesn’t. My life can still be a shit show like anyone else’s.)
But it’s wonderful because doing what you really want comes with a wonderful feeling. The feeling of being you.
Doing what you really want in business is like that, too.
So if something feels misaligned in your business, it’s time to get clear on what you REALLY want and map out how to turn that into money.
