Jeff Padovani, a Tiny Habits coach and serial entrepreneur, is one of the most charismatic and entertaining guys you’ll ever meet — who also happens to be my ex-husband! Without him, I never would have entered the world of business, spent hours listening to Tony Robbins, or become a step-mom to two amazing young men.

In this conversation, I play devil’s advocate, exploring habit change, goals, and the role future planning plays in our identity. The resources, tips and practices come fast and furious, in classic Jeff style.

Here’s some of what we explore:

  • How Jeff manifested a house in six months as a broke, in debt “loser” who was living with his mother
  • Why death is important in optimizing your life
  • 3 tools for manifesting your goals by creating your future
  • The neurological hack for creating happiness and achieving your goals
  • The power of tiny habits coaching for positive change

Optimize Your Life with Tiny Habits

The key to optimizing your life is small actions for dramatic impact. If you want to be happier, healthier or more loving, you’ll close the gap between where you are and where you want to be with small steps. Each one improves your quality of life right away as you witness yourself moving towards your goals.

Take back control from your unconscious mind by introducing the story of the life you want. Jeff uses tools like Future Journaling and gratitude practices to hack his neurology and program himself with thoughts that improve his life.

Make your desirable behaviors inevitable by measuring them. Jeff carries a step counter and enjoys the challenge of getting 10,000 steps a day. Since he started writing daily exercises on his dry erase board, he’s exercising more. Track your progress to maintain your focus.

Future Journaling is a hope-generator for creating a positive future. When you write about your future as if it’s already happened, your brain can’t tell the difference. You’re feeding your brain positive stories and creating new neural connections that feel good in the present, while increasing the chances of realizing your goals.

To get what you want, you must become the person who has those things, and you do so with incremental actions. Journaling gave Jeff hyper-focus on what he wanted to create. Despite being broke, in debt and living with his mother, he was able to buy a house within six months by focusing on and writing about his goals every day.

Taking tiny steps towards what you want regret-proofs your life. Dying people regret not loving enough and playing it safe in their choices. By taking action towards what you want each day, you’ll move it and reduce regret.

The best way to get rid of bad habits is to crowd them out with good ones. For example, if you have a habit of smoking and envision your future healthy self, you’ll add healthy habits like eating whole foods, exercise and meditation. The image of yourself as a smoker contradicts your identity as a healthy person, and the smoking habit will fall away.

None of your stories are true, so which would you like to tell? The input in your life influences the stories in your head, which creates your output. By removing sources of negative stories, like the news, and replacing that input with gratitude exercises and future journaling, the quality of your thinking improves and your behavior shifts naturally.

Turbo-charge your future planning with gratitude. Take a moment to experience gratitude before future journaling or planning to create a happy state that releases serotonin and dopamine. These chemicals are like fertilizer for your brain, and you’re more likely to create the future you desire.

Grit is a powerful habit to cultivate through enduring discomfort. Jeff began intermittent fasting to heal his pancreatitis and gallbladder issues. He came to enjoy the feeling of not eating, which he sees as “grit,” breaking the addiction to comfort and distraction.

Set yourself up for a good day by controlling your AM and PM. Your morning and evening routines bookend your day, where Jeff sees you have the most influence. Focus on going to bed early for a good night’s sleep, and wake up refreshed.
