At the 5-day “Beyond Psychology” training I attended last week with Michael Neill, I spent time with a lot of coaches.
One of them came to me with a dilemma that I think every coach, healer, or guide has wrestled with at some point:
“I have a new client with a specific issue, and I don’t know anything about it. How can I help her?”
This coach couldn’t promise her health would improve as a result of their coaching, even though he knew peace of mind would help navigate it.
He wanted to do a great job. The best. He cared. And he was doubting his ability to deliver.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Here’s what we discovered:
#1 – His client wasn’t asking him to solve her problem.
She’d made it clear from the start that she was coming to be listened to and seen by him, that she valued his presence.
So the client wasn’t expecting a miracle cure. It was the coach spinning stories about her expectations and his ability to deliver…that weren’t true or relevant.
#2 – The real issue was self-doubt.
The coach was so impressed by his client’s brilliance and accomplishments, he couldn’t see what he brought to the table.
So I asked him:
“What do you actually know about this?”
We’d been exploring the difference all weekend between thinking and knowing.
Thinking is the noisy swirl of “not enough” and “what if I mess this up?”
Knowing is the quiet, grounded truth.
The coach was thinking:
- This client is so much smarter and more accomplished than me – how can I possibly help her?
- Am I good enough?
- I need to have a solution for my client to do a good job
Here’s what he knew:
- I love being with people.
- I’m really good at being present with people and loving them.
- I don’t know if this will help with her health.
What he didn’t yet see was the power in that presence. He didn’t trust that loving someone and listening could be enough.
So I told him a story.
The most powerful coaching I’ve ever received was so different from any other coaching I’d experienced (and I’ve worked with a lot of coaches!) that it was striking.
There was so much SPACE in the conversation. It was almost like the coach wasn’t there – of course, he was, but is was completely judgement-free and without agenda.
I stepped into this glorious space of love where I could access my own wisdom and clarity.
The problems I made up dissolved before my eyes, and the solutions for my real challenges emerged naturally.
And the coach hadn’t said or done anything – except be there fully. I found what I was looking for inside of me, which is the only place to ever look.
That’s the power of loving presence and listening.
The coach heard my story and noticed how it had been happening with us all weekend, and that is was actually happening right now.
Suddenly, he saw that being present with his client and loving her wasn’t just “enough” – it’s everything.
That’s the kind of insight we explore together inside the IMPACT membership.
This July, we’re diving into the theme: ✨ Unapologetically You ✨
Because the more you trust your own presence, your way of serving, and your way of creating, the more your clients (and your business) thrive.
We’re also continuing the 90 Day Money Game, a playful exploration of creating clients and offers from alignment—not force.
