Peter Sleigh is a transformative coach and friend who I’ve dubbed Peter the Profound because of the deep questions he asks and the profound stillness he inspires.

When I asked Peter what conversation he’d most like to have, he said, “An exploratory conversation where we look fresh to see what’s possible, forget everything we think we know, and just look together.” That sums up the spirit of this podcast episode.

We talk about navigating times of transition, being in the space of not-knowing, trusting the universe to bring what we need, and why he stepped away from his successful accountancy business.

Here’s some of what we explore:

  • Peter’s life-changing trip to Liberia and how it shifted the entire trajectory of his life and business in a single moment
  • The bravery of surrendering to be used by the universe
  • Shifting from the paradigm of doing to the paradigm of acceptance
  • What it means to live a guided life
  • Navigating difficult choices with grace by sitting in the unknown until guidance appears
  • The advantages and disadvantages of goal-setting

A Journey of Surrender and Infinite Possiblities

“We can’t fail in this game called life.” – Peter Sleigh

Living a guided life means surrendering to being used by the universe; it’s sometimes scary and unsettling, but always beautiful. Peter has made himself available to be used by the universe, rather than living from his own shoulds and desires. We don’t have to hammer our way through obstacles when we can be guided.

When we wait in not-knowing, the knowing eventually becomes obvious — in the Universe’s timing, not ours. There’s an alternative to either resisting or reaching, when we wait for inner guidance to direct us.

Being “used by the Universe” isn’t being passive; it means being available and open to possibilities. Peter follows the signs and waits, trusting that God knows the path better than he does. It’s a moment-by-moment journey of surrender. When he knows it’s time to act, it flows.

“I love handing it over to the universe. ‘This is up to you. Just guide me. Just allow me to serve.’” – Peter Sleigh

When your inner guidance changes, it doesn’t mean you were wrong. The path of creation is not linear. Peter likens it to mountaineering; you climb to the first base, take a look, and get fresh guidance, then repeat it at every base on the climb. Your guidance will change with each new perspective.

Peter spent 10 days in Liberia, Africa on a charity personal development experience, and his whole life was turned upside down. One moment he didn’t know, and the next he knew it was time to leave the accountancy business. He went home, spoke to his business partner, and put the business up for sale.

The Universe is always guiding you, even when you don’t feel it. Peter had no understanding of “being guided” when he created an accountancy business from his back bedroom, but looking back, he sees it clearly. He grew the business without a plan, led entirely by his intuition.

We’re designed to be guided by life, living in the flow. When things look complicated, we’ve lost our way. When we let go of trying, life is simple. Creating is what we do naturally, and it’s much more fun when we recognize our okayness.

Our only job is to accept the gift of life. We create limitations on what’s possible when we attach our sense of okayness to our results. When we leave the paradigm of needing and doing more, we no longer have to prove ourselves. Creating from a sense of being at home brings a sense of ease.

The more you relinquish control, the more rich your experience of life becomes. You don’t lose anything in this surrender. You can create beautiful things, but you don’t have to, and it’s an enjoyable ride.

When we feel safe and at home in ourselves, relieving suffering in the world becomes natural. We’re more available to help others when we know there’s nothing we need to change in ourselves or the world to be okay.

“If I died tomorrow, what a life I’ve lived! Everything else is a bonus.”
