an open notebook with a "You already know" message and a penI don’t usually give advice to clients, since our conversations are spaces for them to find inner clarity and reflect on the life-changing shit. 😆

But I do occasionally offer suggestions and advice to people outside of that. Here are two pieces of advice I shared last week.

Advice #1

I helped my life partner work on his one-page website copy. We whipped up something pretty cool, not yet perfect, but close enough.

My advice: “Put this on a website. NOW. Don’t wait for it to be done. You’ll get clearer in the process of doing it, and it will move everything forward.”

It remains to be seen if he’ll actually listen to me. He hasn’t yet.

Takeaway: Take action before you feel “ready.” The clarity comes from doing.

Advice #2

I met with a new business connection who’s offering coaching for career change decisions, inner compass and alignment. It sounds like the same ole thing (to me).

He also does Akashic Records consulting, and was surprised that people were asking for readings.

My advice: “What if you make your career transition coaching more about the Akashic Records bit? Lead with it. It immediately stands out, and it sounds like your people are drawn to it anyway.”

I sent it to him in a voice message. No reply yet.

Takeaway: Let your weird show in your business. Don’t be safe and vanilla! It’s more compelling, magnetic and fun.

This is probably why I don’t offer advice, especially with clients. People only listen to it if they already think it’s a good idea.

Experience has shown me that six months or a maybe a year from now, they’ll be ready for that “advice.”

They’ll be acting on it, but by that time, they’ll have forgotten our conversation entirely and I won’t get any credit. 😆

That’s why I prefer turning people onto what they already know, and get them to follow the nudge to the next step. They’re much more likely to listen to themselves than me.

It’s also easier and more fun to get paid to help people access what they already have than to try to get them to adopt my ideas.

As one of my mentors says, “I help people see the stuff they’ve already got, and remember the things
they already know, and they pay me a lot of money for it. It’s the best con ever!” (She’s 84 years-old and the furthest thing from a con artist, probably the wisest person I know.)

I don’t rely on advice because you don’t need mine.

You already know.

There’s something you’ve been putting off. Something you’re waiting to feel more ready for. Or something you’re quietly downplaying because it feels too weird, too specific, too you.

That’s the thing.

Not because I said so, but because you already feel it.

What I do with people isn’t giving them answers. It’s helping them see what they’re already sitting on and trust it enough to move.
