What happens when your business is successful, but it no longer feels like yours?

In this conversation, Dr. Eboni L. Truss shares how years of following business advice, coaching industry trends, and external expectations slowly pulled her away from the work she was originally called to do. What followed was a process she now calls “unbecoming,” a return to the voice, purpose, and message she had nearly lost.

Whether you’re questioning your business direction, feeling disconnected from your work, or sensing that you’ve become someone you never intended to be, this conversation offers a powerful invitation to pause and listen.

Listen on the Podcast:

Here’s some of what we explore:

• How a successful business can slowly drift away from your authentic purpose
• The surprising sign that told Eboni she was no longer aligned with her work
• Why high-achieving entrepreneurs often wake up feeling trapped inside lives they worked hard to build
• The hidden cost of building a business around what sells instead of what matters
• What “unbecoming” means and why it may be more important than personal development
• A radically different relationship with abundance, freedom, and authentic leadership

When Success Pulls You Away From Your Authentic Purpose

For years, Eboni Truss did what many entrepreneurs are taught to do.

She hired coaches. She followed experts. She studied successful people in her industry and implemented their advice.

The problem wasn’t that the advice was bad. The problem was that, little by little, she stopped listening to herself.

As she adapted her messaging, offers, language, and positioning to fit what others said would work, she slowly drifted away from the original purpose behind her business.

Eventually, she realized she no longer sounded like herself.

“Slowly but surely, I started moving away from the original intent of my business. Until suddenly I sounded just like my coaches. I marketed just like the gurus.” – Eboni Truss

What began as a business helping people rediscover their purpose had become something else entirely.

And she didn’t notice it happening for years.

The Business Wake-Up Call No One Wants

The first sign wasn’t spiritual. It was practical.

Her business began drying up.

Clients stopped renewing. Group programs stopped filling. Opportunities that once seemed effortless began disappearing.

At first, she couldn’t understand why because nothing had changed operationally. The more she looked, the more she saw an uncomfortable truth: she had built a business that looked successful on the outside while becoming increasingly disconnected from herself on the inside.

That realization started a process of questioning not only her business, but the assumptions she had built her life around.

Unbecoming: Returning to Who You Were Before the Masks

Rather than adding more strategies, Eboni did something unexpected.

She unsubscribed.

From newsletters. Coaches. Experts. Marketing advice.

It was her “business detox.”

For the first time in years, she stopped consuming other people’s opinions long enough to hear her own voice again.

What emerged was the idea of “unbecoming.” Not becoming a better, more successful or more productive version of yourself, but shedding everything that isn’t who you are.

Unbecoming the layers of performance, perfectionism, and conditioning that convinced you that who you are is not enough.

“Unbecoming is all about going back to the place of being who we were born being, saying what we were born to say, doing the things we were born to do.” – Eboni Truss

What started as a personal business insight eventually became her life’s work.

Authentic Leadership and the Courage to Change Direction

Many of the entrepreneurs Eboni serves have built businesses, careers, and lives that look impressive from the outside.

Yet something feels off.

The challenge is not simply discovering that truth. It’s having the courage to respond to it.

Changing direction often means releasing identities, expectations, achievements, and stories that have become deeply attached to our sense of worth.

Eboni’s work helps people navigate that transition without destroying everything they’ve built. Instead, she helps them reconnect with what has been true all along.

Abundance, Freedom, and a New Way of Doing Business

Freedom isn’t freedom from responsibility.

It’s freedom from the belief that your worth depends on performance.

It’s shedding the fear that everything rests on your shoulders, and that you must constantly hustle to deserve success.

Eboni shares how her understanding of abundance shifted when she began noticing evidence of “plenty” everywhere around her.

That shift transformed not only how she approaches business, but how she experiences life itself.

“I can create anything. I can be free to move about the cabin, understanding that I will always be taken care of.” – Eboni Truss

From that place, authenticity stops feeling risky, and starts feeling natural.
