A reader and client wrote to me recently with a raw, honest question:
“I think I lost a client. But it’s not in my control what people will or won’t do. Holy shit, all I can do is show up.
“This feels different.
“This feels more true.
“This feels like freedom.
“Now….how do I help other people see this?!
“Do you have clients that don’t get it?!”
Oh, yes. Absolutely.
But what does “getting it” even mean?
For me, someone is “getting it” when they’re having insights, moments of wonder, curiosity or “DOH! Why didn’t
I see that before?” They’re exploring and discovering something new.
Sometimes “getting it” is tiny, and sometimes it’s life-changing. In any case, it makes life lighter, richer and more alive.
Every one of my current clients is “getting it” in their own way.
But I have had clients who didn’t seem to be getting it at all.
They’ve read the books, we’ve had conversations. They know the right words to say. They have a conceptual understanding, but they’re not seeing it in a way that changes anything.
We bump up against, “I already know that,” or, “Yeah, but what does that have to do with getting clients?”
Here’s what I’ve learned:
The more I need my clients to “get it,” the less they do.
When I relax into presence and stop trying to convince them, the pointing is clearer. And they’re more likely to see.
Presence does the pointing.
That means actually being in the space I’m pointing to (presence) is the most impactful thing I can do as a coach.
That’s the magic, really. Anything that occurs to you from presence and listening is going to be the best you’ve got.
And that’s really, really good.
It’s amazing that you’re seeing all the stuff you can’t control (that you sometimes think you can.) Absolutely amazing, because once you see it, and suspect it’s not helpful, it’s already dissolving.
